Technical Tip of the Week

* It is perhaps, little known how very important it is to keep the steering box full of 90 weight oil on all early Land-Rovers. The reason for this is that the bearing races for the steering shaft are integral, and not remove-able from the shaft itself. When the box lubricant is allowed to fall below the full mark, the upper bearing race soon becomes dry of the necessary lubricant, causing the race to score, pit, and ultimately fail. Given the very high cost of the necessary parts to rebuild a steering box, or the cost of having one done, [not to mention the difficulty of locating the necessary bits], it augurs well for the owner to attend to this oft-overlooked service point.
